Frequently Asked Questions

 

1. When do the Championships begin?

 

The main Championship event starts on Monday 25th July at 2.15pm. A rapidplay takes place on Sunday 24th starting at 11.00am. Further details can be found on the Schedules page and the Main events page.

 

2. Where are the events taking place?

 

All events including the Championship are taking place at Ponds Forge, a world class venue at the heart of the Sheffield. It is an International Sports Centre with fantastic facilities and exciting opportunities for sport, leisure and entertainment. See more information about it on our Venue page. Spectators to the chess are welcome and admission is free.

 

3. Are there any events for Beginners and Juniors?

 

Yes there are organised events for players of all ability, age and experience. Specific details about Junior Events can be seen here

 

4. Who do I send my entry form to?

 

All entries should be sent to: Congress Secretary,

Roger Edwards,

British Chess Championships,

PO Box 2701,

Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 9AL, UK.

   

Cheques/postal orders should be crossed and made payable to the English Chess Federation and sent with your entry form. To assist with the smooth running of the Championships please return your form as soon as possible.

5. When is the deadline for entries?

 

There are two main deadline dates: Monday 4th July
  Saturday 18th July (for Junior events, Rapidplays & Weekenders only)

 

The Main Events page has more specific details for each event, marked in red.

 

Note: Entries can be sent at any time and when processed your name will appear on the Entrants page.

 

6. As a Competitor what other information do I need to know?

 

See the Information for Competitors section which includes useful tips, guidance and links.

 

7. I still haven't booked my accommodation. What choices do I have?

 

Take a look at our Accommodation page where you will find details about a whole range of options. Booking early is advisable as Sheffield is a popular attraction during the summer months.

8. When is the Congress Programme going to be available?

 

The congress programme is available here for download or if you prefer, read it online. You are strongly advised to make yourself aware of the contents before the Championships begin.

 

9. I would like to make a donation towards the Congress funds. How can I do this?

 

Simply send a cheque or postal order to the Congress Secretary's address above made payable to the English Chess Federation. If you would prefer to send a donation separately and not part of an entry, just add a small note to identify it as such, thank you.

 

10. My question is not answered on this page. What should I do?

 

Take a look at the Information for Competitors section or download the Entry Brochure which has a lot of useful information too.
