English Chess Federation President CJ De Mooi,
of Eggheads fame, will preside over the Opening
Ceremony for the Darwin Strategic 98th British
Chess Championships.
This will take place at 2pm Monday 25 July at
Ponds Forge International Sports Centre which is
where all the many events are taking place until
Saturday 6 August.
In his address CJ will emphasise that it has
been agreed the ECF and the British Land UK
Chess Challenge will work in very close
cooperation in the future.
CJ said
'This is excellent news and should enable us to
reach out to children, many of whom are already
enthusiastic players.'
Michael Basman, Chief Organiser of the UK
Chess Challenge said, 'The English Chess
Federation is an extremely valuable
organisation. Their Certificate of Merit Scheme
is a very useful teaching tool and moreover
doing the tests is great fun.'

There are sections for every level of player
at the British Chess Championships from novice
to Grandmaster, of any age or nationality, in
the biggest annual chess festival in the UK.
Whether you like rapid chess or prefer longer
internationally rated games, there's an event
for you.
The event takes place from Monday, 25 July 2011
to Saturday, 6 August 2011 at
Pond's
Forge.
Games in the championships start at 2.15pm and
there is excellent online coverage on all the
major chess websites.
CJ de Mooi - from the BBC's Egg Heads
Team - is President of the English Chess
Federation and has made sure the best players
are coming to the Steel City. That includes
Grandmasters Micky Adams and Nigel Short - both
of whom are past challengers for the World
title.
The championships include the junior
championships from under-8s to the Under-16s.
Some of the under-8s can hardy reach the other
side of the chess board, but they record their
moves and they are already beating adults. At
the other end of the scale there's the British
Senior Championships and there are graded events
for club players. Most of these event take place
in the morning starting at 9.30 am.
Last year at Canterbury there were 1,000 entries
for all events. Yorkshire has a strong chess
fraternity so we are hoping to get very close to
that figure again.
Entry for spectators is free and International
Chess Master Andrew Martin will provide the
afternoon commentary and analysis on key matches
in a side room. This will go out live around the
world on the web. There are also teaching
sessions for junior most lunchtimes - many
players have said how watching the commentary
has taught them a great deal!
Anyone interested in playing needs to be a
member of their national chess association
(English players can join
here) and entry forms are
here.

14 year-year-old Marcus Harvey |
|
CHESS: Fourteen-year-old
Marcus Harvey of Bicester Chess Club secured his
place in the British Chess Championship later in
the summer by winning the recent Kidlington Open
Tournament.
He won all five games over
the weekend including wins against the two
previous years’ winners and a victory against a
chess master. His win was all the more
remarkable as he was seeded 18th out of a
section of 28 players.
The youngster produced a
grading performance of 247, comparable with some
of the top players in the country.
As well as winning the £250
first prize he also added another £10 by taking
the team prize which included Bicester player
Carl Portman.
Marcus will go onto to play
at the British championships in Sheffield during
the summer which will be held over two weeks.

article about Marcus
